From mother to piglet: the lasting influence of the maternal microbiome
🔍 The team investigated how maternal microbiota influences piglet gut health during the critical suckling-to-weaning period. Using 16S rRNA gene sequencing, they analyzed rectal swabs from 18 sow-piglet pairs collected from 7 days after birth to 10 days post-weaning.
Why it matters: A well-balanced microbiome is essential for immunity, metabolism, and disease resistance in pigs—insights that are valuable for both agriculture and biomedical research.
👉 This study provides deeper insights into how maternal factors shape early-life microbiota development and highlights potential strategies to support lifelong pig health.
