Ghent University offers a unique proposal: the collaboration between veterinarians, physicians and scientists from different disciplines present at Ghent University takes the research to a higher level and creates many opportunities for innovation. At our Faculty of Veterinary Medicine these innovations can be tested in our own facilities and on the target species.

Diversity of the Ixodes ricinus Microbiome Across Belgian Ecoregions and Its Association with Pathogen and Symbiont Presence
Ticks are important vectors of zoonotic pathogens, but their microbiome鈥攁nd the way it interacts with pathogens鈥攊s still not fully understood under natural conditions. This study investigated the microbiome diversity and pathogen prevalence in Ixodes ricinus nymphs collected across three Belgian ecoregions: Sandy Loam, Condroz, and Ardennes.
馃攷 Key findings:
路 Clear regional differences in microbiome composition and pathogen prevalence.
路 Borrelia burgdorferi s.l. was most prevalent in the Ardennes, while Anaplasma phagocytophilum dominated in Sandy Loam.
路 Endosymbionts such as Midichloria mitochondrii and Spiroplasma ixodetis showed distinct geographic distributions.
路 Network analysis revealed potential interactions between pathogens and the microbiota, including evidence that Rickettsia helvetica may actively shape microbial community structure.
路 Microbiome robustness varied across ecoregions, emphasizing the role of ecological context in microbial interactions.
